As Sam walked barefoot through the barely lit locker room reeking of sweat and cheap perfume, all she could do was roll her eyes at the gossiping teenage girls and mutter to herself, “I hate this. I hate this a lot.”

It wasn’t the P.E. part she despised—unlike most of the drama queens in her class, who ran each lap ridiculously slowly and complained of side-aches after a minute or so of slow jogging—P.E. was damn easy. She could outrun almost anyone in either the guys or girls P.E. classes (after freshman year, conservative parents were concerned about the shameless flirting and folding of the gym shorts until the school agreed to spilt them into two groups), she had good upper body strength, and the track coach had been trying (in vain) to get her to join team.

Not that Sam would ever join the track team. She, in her words, didn’t ‘believe in organized sports,’ and thought that the money funded in all the sports programs would go to better use in the arts and drama department. Much to the track coach’s dismay.

It was the whole girls locker room that turned her off.

Sam was usually pretty secure about herself—at least she was when she was hanging out with her best friends, who (with the exception of Danny in the occasional awkward moment, who tended to excel in social faux pas) were always supportive of her. But showering after P.E. was always extremely awkward for her, especially with the catty comments other girls always seemed to make. And it didn’t help that of all the people she could have been placed next to, her gym locker was right next to the Queen of the Bitches, Paullina Sanchez herself.

Sam focused her eyes on her locker and attempted to just get dressed in record time in order avoid Paullina and Star’s daily gossip dish-out, mostly of the Oh-Em-Gee-That-Girl-Is-Such-A-Freak-Oh-My-Didn’t-See-You-There kind.

I am so not in the mood, Sam grumbled.

“Star!” Paullina shrieked, strutting around in her garishly bright pink bra. “You’ll never guess what happened yesterday!”

You got another nose job and have now the maximum amount of plastic surgery a person is allowed to get, Sam said sardonically to herself.

Without letting Star have a chance to squeal her typical “What!’ Paullina kept on talking, oblivious to the damage her shrill tone was doing to the rest of the girls’ ears. “Danny Phantom rescued me!”

Sam, of course, had been there. Rescue wasn’t really the word she would have used. More like, run into the face of danger in order to play the damsel in distress Buttercup to his Wesley.

“Oh my god, what did he say!” Star said back, acting like she was actually interested in the conversation. Good God. Is this the only thing that circles through their minds, Sam wondered to herself.

“He totally flirted with me,” the starstruck Paullina said. “He is soo into me.”

Right, and the whole awkward moment when he had to go, “Paullina, you should let go on my neck now,” after she totally threw herself at him is a code for, I’m deeply in love with you.

“He is sooo hot,” she sighed dramatically. “I love his green eyes and his white hair. Its just so…gorgeous…”

Well, as much as Sam wanted to, she couldn’t honestly disagree with that. Damn. She and I actually agree on something. This is going to need therapy to get over.

“I’m going to ask him to Prom,” she declared suddenly. “He’ll totally jump at the chance to getting to go with me!”

Sam was so appalled by the idea of Danny going with Paullina that she blurted out without thinking, “Right, Paullina. He’ll jump at the chance, even though every time you see him he’s running frantically away from you and your hoard of fangirls.”

Oops.

Paullina’s pretty features twisted into a look of pure disgust. With a raise of a single eyebrow, Scarlett O’Hara style, she sneered, “Like you should talk, goth girl.”

“Hey, at least I’ve got more dignity than chasing shamelessly after an obviously uninterested guy,” Sam said to her locker as she slipped on her skirt.

“At least I’ve got a chance with him, more than anyone in the school. You don’t have a wish, you stupid puta. You’re tiny with absolutely no figure and have got the worst fashion sense ever. I bet Phantom would get himself caught by that hunting ghost than ever go out on a date with you,” Paullina said with absolute cruelty.

Sam’s jaw dropped in the privacy of her locker door. Hurt flooded her heart as she contemplated for a moment on how Paullina was probably telling the truth.

Yeah, Sam, you’ve got no chance, so why do you even bother…

But then the self-pity ended in a flash and any hint of tears retreated, as she whirled around and looked Paullina straight into her perfectly made up eyes.

“Oh yeah,” Sam said coolly. “Actually, I have gone on a date with Phantom.”

Well, it was just the Nasty Burger after that stupid beauty pageant, but hey, close enough…

Now it was Paullina turn to be stunned. Her emerald eyes widened and looked her down; like she was making sure that she was still talking to the same Sam Manson she’d known all these years.

“You liar,” she said when she found her voice. “You’re such a wannabe. Like he would even talk to you.”

“Actually, he does,” she shot back. “I know a lot more about him than you will ever know.” The lies—er, well, mostly misleading truths, as she attempted to justify herself—spilled out as her jaw disconnected from her brain and started working on my own. “I hang out with him. I’ve kissed him. He’s kissed me. He’s my boyfriend. So don’t even bother, Paullina, because he doesn’t give a damn about you.”

Am I self-destructive? This could be considered suicidal in some cultures…

“You,” Paullina sputtered. “You’re bluffing. Nobody in this school believes that you would ever go out with Danny Phantom.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Fine then, Sammy,” Paullina said with a glint in her eye. “Prove it. If you don’t, then the whole school will know what a complete sell-out and wannabe you are.”

Then she stomped out of the room in her typical diva-esque manner, pulling her shirt on and dragging the glaring Star out with her.

Sam stood there in the same spot Paullina had left her, until all the girls had left the locker room. Her mind finally comprehended the trouble she was now in.

Oh. My. Effing. God. What have I done?

S2

3 periods and 87 comments later, Sam was really regretting her Prove-Paullina-Wrong act of self-defense. 20 of them were from some of the nicer people of the school who asked her if the rumors were true, 29 of them were Paullina’s ‘friends’ who whispered, “You lying bitch,” in her ear, and the rest were other snobbish people who looked her down quite obviously and said in a snide tone, “Well, it’s obvious the rumors aren’t true,” while they smirked and strolled away.

Not that she was keeping track.

It also didn’t help that in Valerie’s eyes she had now been kicked to the same category of ghosts—evil creatures not worthy to be called part of this world. In every class that she shared with Val, Val made it a point to show Sam and the rest of the class the hostility she had just gained towards Sam. And the bruises weren’t going to fade anytime soon, Sam discovered, when she checked her painfully throbbing shin courtesy of Val.

Did Tucker slip me something in my Starbucks this morning? Because it’s really the only reasonable explanation why I decided to do this…

So when she finally saw Tucker in Library Study Hall, she was wearing a baseball cap she yanked from some poor unsuspecting individual in order to hide half her face, and was sneaking around like she was ditching class and trying to avoid getting caught.

“Nice hat, Sam. Didn’t come in black?” Tucker said sarcastically when he saw her creeping about in her pathetic attempt at becoming invisible.

“Shh!” she said frantically, as she grabbed him behind a bookshelf.

“Er, Sam? Did you cut class again? Or is there another explanation why you’re acting like you’re wanted by the law?

“Tucker, something—“

He interrupted her. “Oh, and if you’re wondering where Danny is, which you most likely are, he got caught up with a ghost. That’s why he hasn’t been to school all day. Mr. Lancer thinks he’s skipped again. He’s going to get detention for sure.”

“Tucker—“

“And Prom’s coming up. I am not going to miss my prom. I don’t care how I am going to get a date—“

“Tucker.”

“But I’m going to get one, and you and Danny are going to help me. So I say that--”

“TUCKER!” Sam shrieked in frustration.

He blinked. “I’m talking too much, am I?”

“You haven’t let me say a word since I got to Study Hall. But forget it. Tucker, something really big has happened.”

“DAMN! I knew it! Danny asked you to prom? What happened? I was so close to—“

Sam glared and pointed to her shoe. “Combat boots. Do I need to enforce them?”

Tucker looked alarmed at the painful looking shoe and said hesitantly, “So…did he ask you?”

“NO!” Sam said, yanking her hair in frustration. “If he did, do you think I’d be acting so weird!”

“You always act weird, Sam,” Tucker said reasonably. “But is there a reason why you suddenly have embraced the FBI?”

Sam took a deep breath and spilled it all in one long sentence. “I was at P.E. and Paullina was being a bitch and she was talking about Danny Phantom and she said something really mean about me and Phantom and I got really pissed off and…accidentally…said…Phantom…was…my…boyfriend…” she trailed off.

Tucker stared at her. “You told Paullina,” he said slowly, “that you’re going out with Danny Phantom.”

“Yes,” Sam said miserably.

“You told Paullina,” Tucker still held his incredulous look, “that you and Phantom are an item?”

“Yes, OK!” Sam snapped.

“You told—“ and Tucker immediately started laughing. Really, really hard.

“This is not helping,” Sam hit her forehead against the bookshelf in angry frustration. Several books toppled down and hit her on the head, but she barely felt them.

“I cannot believe this,” Tucker said between gasps of oxygen. “What do you think Danny’s gonna say?”

“I’m not sure,” Sam said with a pained sigh. “But he definitely won’t be asking me to prom.”

S2

In the middle of literature class Danny chose that moment to come staggering in, hair dripping with the remnants of the day’s earlier spring shower, clothes soaked through and torn. The A-List made its typical snicker, along with Dash’s, “Hey, Fentobo, your cardboard box spring a leak?”

“Mr. Fenton,” Mr. Lancer said with impatience. “Do you have an explanation why you’ve missed 5 classes today!”

“Accident,” was all he said, as he slumped down on the seat next to Sam’s.

“Hey,” Sam greeted him with a smile. Might as well enjoy the last few moments when he wasn’t angry with her.

He grinned back weakly at her. “Skulker,” was all he said back. Sam frowned. Usually Danny could handle Skulker just fine. She was about to ask him if he got a new upgrade when Dash interrupted the moment. He leaned forward and asked in an obnoxious tone, “Hey, Fen-tard, what do you think about the fact that your girlfriend is—“

Sam said extremely loudly and a little too casually, “Mr. Lancer! I was wondering…er…can you explain the details of….the Lord of the Flies and its symbolism?”

The class groaned in frustration, and Danny gave her a confused look. She gave him a forced smile and let her head fall against her desk, knowing that they were awaiting a very long and boring discussion about the book they were currently reading.

And all because she had to open her big mouth to Paullina.

“You’re going to have to tell him sooner or later, you know,” Tucker whispered in her ear. “You can’t exactly hide it from him.”

“Later sounds good to me,” Sam slumped.

“Do it like pulling of a Band-aid,” he advised.

“Somehow,” Sam murmured, “it isn’t that simple.”

S2

“You did what!” Danny said, his blue eyes swirling with utter confusion. After school, Sam had dragged them off to the rooftop of the school where she wouldn’t have to worry about being:

Assaulted by a Danny Phantom fangirl, Paullina the head of them all.

Interrupted by some rude teenager about how she was so very obviously lying.

Murdered by her best friend Danny in front of everyone.

“Um…” she gave a nervous giggle that didn’t sound like her at all. “I told Paullina I was dating Danny Phantom?”

Tucker burst into peals of laughter again.

“Shut up, Tucker!” Sam said in complete defeat. “This is not funny!”

Danny had an unreadable expression in his eyes. “Why would you do that?” he asked in an odd voice.

Um, because I would die before letting Paullina—or any other stupid fangirl—go to the prom with you, she yelled internally.

What she said out loud, however, was, “Well, she insulted me, and in the heat of the moment, I kinda just said something that I knew would make me win the argument, without really thinking…”

“Danny, you gotta admit it’s hilarious,” Tucker wiped tears from his eyes, still attempting to control his guffaws.

Danny didn’t say anything. The odd unreadable expression still painted his face.

Sam shifted uncomfortably. She almost wished he’d be yelling at her, or getting upset, or showing some sort of emotion that showed how he felt about the whole situation. She could take anger. At least she knew how he felt when he got mad with her. But now, she didn’t know what to expect.

Tucker rolled her eyes. “Ah, teenage angst. How it plagues us so. He patted them both on the back with a devious smirk on his face. “Don’t worry. I have a plan on how to save Sam’s face and bring everything back to the way it was.”

Both of them looked at Tucker with a mistrusting look. “And we should trust you on this why?” Sam said in disbelief.

“No worries,” a sly smile crawled up on his face. “Let’s meet at my house tonight at 8. I’ll show you all the whole thing.”

S2

“Tucker. You. Are. Insane.”

“What are you talking about?” Tucker said indignantly. “It’s a brilliant plan!” He slammed his fist down on his already wobbling desk. “Brilliant, I tell you!”

“Telling us just to kiss in front of everyone is not a plan, let alone brilliant,” Danny said dryly. “It’s something for your stupid collection of “Awkward Moments Between Danny and Sam.”

“Nuh uh,” Tucker insisted. “It’ll work perfectly. You convince the school that you guys are least “romantically” know each other, and eventually you can just say how it didn’t work out between you, the whole being dead thing and all.”

“Tucker, seriously,” Sam started.

“Fine then,” he stuck his chin in the air. “Just go tell Paullina you were lying and you just said it in the heat of the moment.”

For a split second Sam considered what would happened. Not only would Paullina laugh at her, she would make sure the entire school knew and mocked her for it.

So she had two choices. She could either become the laughingstock of the school.

Or she could kiss the guy who she was completely and madly in love with.

For some reason, the latter appealed a lot more to her. But she’d never have admitted it to Tucker.

“I’ll do it,” Danny said suddenly.

Sam looked at him. “You sure? You don’t have to do this,” Sam said, though she had to tear each word out of her mouth.

“Yeah, I’m sure. I’m not a naïve freshman anymore, Sam. I know what Paullina would do to you if you admitted your wrongdoings,” he said with a shrug.

Sam spontaneously hugged him. “Thank you thank you thank you thank you!” she sobbed. Not literally, of course. “Thank you thank you thank you—you have no idea of the humiliation you just spared me.”

“Ah, well,” he said teasingly, “I suppose one more fake-out-make-out wouldn’t hurt.”

Click.

“You guys are adorable together,” Tucker said with satisfaction while he looked at his PDA/camera.

Sam just threw her boot at him.

S2

Sam twisted as she attempted to get in a position that did not require her being so close to Danny. Somehow, the plan sounded a lot better before Tucker crammed them both into a isolated closet off where teachers weren’t likely to find them.

Well, it wasn’t just that. Part of her trepidation about being in such close proximity of him was the threat that if pushed, she might lean into his lips, which were a very short distance away, and kiss him. In a completely non-fake way.

And then she’d be totally screwed.

“OK,” Tucker had said the night before when they composed a decent Keep-Sam-From-Complete-Humiliation plot. “So you guys don’t want to kiss in front of everyone?”

“No,” Danny and Sam had said in unison.

“Alright, alright,” Tucker groaned. “You guys are so boring. That kills my first idea. Well, we have to make sure its seen by someone who’s guaranteed to make sure the entire school knows.”

“But not my parents,” Sam said hastily. “Do you know what they would do?”

“Sam,” Tucker said in a no-duh tone. “Who tells their parents gossip that going on around school?”

“Point,” said Danny.

“And Paullina definitely has too see it. But knowing her,” Sam mused, “If she was wrong, then she’d hate for everyone to know it.”

“But if everyone in the A-List was there,” Tucker finished her train of thought, “especially Star, then it’ll get around the school by the end of the day.”

“So we gotta lure the A-List to wherever we decide to hide in. Hey, Danny darling,” she added, her voice dripping with sarcasm, “pass me a water.”

He played along. “Anything for you, my angel,” he said with a ridiculous grin on his face as he tossed her the bottle.

“You guys seem to play the part of 2 teenagers engaged in an forbidden romance a little too well,” smirked Tucker.

Of course, this only resulted in more bodily injury thrust upon him from Sam.

“So…how long do you think we’ll be in for?”

“Well,” Danny thought aloud, “knowing Tucker, it actually wouldn’t surprise me if the door was locked and he left us here all day.”

Sam, realizing that Tucker would very well do this, jumped up and tested the door.

It opened. Sam breathed a sigh of relief.

“Ghost powers,” Danny poked her. “Remember? Locking us in wouldn’t do much good.”

“Huh,” Sam said, feeling a bit stupid. “Oh. Right.”

There was an awkward silence.

In all those teen magazines that my mom has ever bought me in hopes that I might turn out to become a normal girl, not one of them has ever gave any advice on what to say if you are stuck in a teensy closet with the guy you’re in love with in preparation to pretend to kiss to fool the school.

Useless magazines.

“Look!” they heard Tucker shriek. “There’s Danny Phantom!”

Of course, if anyone knows even an iota about Tucker, then they’d know that he is a horrible actor. So it ended up sounding nervous with a mixture of dramatization in it.

But of course, Paullina didn’t notice a thing. At least Sam guessed she didn’t notice since her scream of joy echoed through the whole school.

In the plan, Paullina was supposed to run down the hallway with her mob of screaming fangirls and admiring teenage boys and end up in front of the closet. Then, Tucker had concluded, she’d open up the closet since there was no one else to go, and she’d see Danny and Sam. Then they were supposed to phase through and leave Paullina freaked out.

“Well,” Danny said, a tinge of nervousness in his voice. “This is it.”

Then, in a movement so fast, almost as if he wanted to do it before he changed his mind, he kissed her.

Sam put her hands around his neck, telling herself, “This doesn’t mean anything, he’s only doing it cuz I was stupid enough to tell Paullina I was dating Danny Phantom, he isn’t even attracted to me,” but his lips were just as she remembered from freshman year and he smelt like Danny, a mixture of his cologne and his shampoo, and his cold ghostly state deeply contrasting with the heat emanating from her body.

Is this what our eternal punishment is going to be like? Giving something to someone but taking it away after a few moments of heaven? Because it really is going to hurt like hell later when we pretend this never happened…

She didn’t want it to stop. She didn’t want to go back to pretending that they were just friends.

But then again, do I have any choice?

Then the long awaited moment came, but Sam hardly registered Paullina’s scream. Danny phased through the floor and they clunked on the ground below, in some unknown basement room (that was meat-free, thank you very much).

“Whoa,” Danny said, putting his hand behind her head to brace the fall for her. Sam couldn’t help noticing that his forehead was still against hers and he was pressed against her in a very…awkward way.

“Well, that worked,” she babbled. “Did you see Paullina’s face? Well, I mean, I didn’t see it either, but I can totally imagine what it would look like.”

Sam, shut up now…

Sam’s jaw seemed to have disconnected from her brain again, however. But it worked—it helped distract her from the fact that Danny was still lying on top of her.

“Serves her right, though, that stupid mind-controlling bitch. I hope she—“

“Sam,” Danny said, the odd expression returning to his face, “shut up for a moment.”

Sam shut up.

Without getting off her, Danny opened his mouth in an attempt to speak. “So this—I mean…oh, screw this.”

Then, leaning a few more inches forward, he kissed her. Again.

And it most definitely was not a fakeout makeout.

S2

“HAH!” Tucker said, smacking his hand against Clockwork’s portable time mirror, which portrayed Sam and Danny in a very compromising position. “There! I got them together! I win! You guys gotta pay up!”

“Fine, fine,” Spectra muttered. “We’ll get you a date for prom.”

“And the $300,” he reminded her. “From ALL of you.”

Clockwork hit his palm on the side of his head. “I have no idea,” he muttered to himself, “why I decided to even get involved with all this.”

“Don’t think,” Skulker said, clicking a button resulting in several evil looking guns unraveling itself from his suit, “that because I participated in this bet I don’t want to pin that stupid whelp on my wall.”

“Hey, no worries,” Tucker shrugged. “This was a temporary truce.”

“I would have won,” growled Ember, her voice bitter with defeat, “and I was close, too. You just got lucky that Sam accidentally did that.”

“You know,” Clockwork asked all the ghosts, “why do you even care if they get together or not?”

“Cuz they’re obviously so meant to be,” Kitty tossed her hair. “Well, that and because we had nothing better to do then get Phantom and that goth chick hooked up. Its like a soap opera, except we’re the writers. And there’s bet money.”

“I see,” Clockwork rolled his eyes, clearly regretting letting them use his time mirror to spy on them.

“I wonder how they’d feel,” Tucker contemplated, “if they learned that they got together through manipulation and a ghostly bet.”

They all thought in silence for a moment.

“If you know what’s best for you,” Clockwork advised, “you probably shouldn’t mention it.”

“Seriously,” Tucker agreed.

The rest of the ghosts nodded in agreement.
GENERAL NOTE: Please comment if you fav! :)

Woot woot, the third installment in the K.I.S.S. series! Don’t ask what K.I.S.S. stands for, cuz I have no idea. –shrugs- Since this is my third oneshot involving Danny and Sam’s first non-fakeout makeout, I was all, hey, might as well make it an arc or a series of something!

Oh and about the title—sorry, couldn’t resist. xD Its actually originally from Phantom of the Opera, my screenname (You know—The Phantom’s Angel of Music) but I twisted it around so it would fit here. Sorta. Actually, not really. Haha. Oh well.

So…enjoy! D Please comment, constructive criticism needed and welcome.
