Sam loved the rain.

She always did, even as a small child. While her classmates in her preschool would run to the teacher to hide behind her, Sam was standing in awe in front of the window, admiring the powerful storm’s ability to rock her small world.

Her parents never did understand why she loved the rain so much. “It’s dark, cold, and depressing,” her mother shrilled to a young Samantha as she excitedly watched the strikes of yellow against the pitch-black sky. “Why don’t you like the sun, Sammy? It’s bright and cheerful and full of hope—much, much better than the rain,” her father added.

Her two best friends, Danny and Tucker, didn’t like the rain too much either. Tucker was deathly afraid of thunder, as demonstrated on a sleepover in their eleventh year. Danny was indifferent towards the rain, as he was towards weather in general—he liked it when it benefited him. Whenever rain got him out of running laps in PE, he loved it, but when it resulted in missing out on a day at the local water park, he despised it.

Now, even when she was almost seventeen, rain was still her favorite weather. She drew back her thick Victorian-style curtains—the only time she ever voluntarily let natural light filter into her room—sat back on the luxurious silk cushions on the window bench adjacent to it, and sipped some coffee enjoying the light show striking Amity Park.

Rainstorms hardly occurred in Amity Park, but when they did, it seemed that Sam was the only one to appreciate it. It was raining softly when they were at school, but everyone seemed to hate it.

“My hair!” Paullina whined, “I spent like, 2 hours straightening it today! And now this stupid rain will ruin all my hard work!”

Sam hardly thought straightening hair was hard work, but before she was able to reply with a biting remark, Dash added something to the conversation.

“We have a huge football game after school, and we may have to cancel. And even if we don’t, I don’t want to play in the cold and the muddy grass! Rain ruins everything!”

“You know,” Sam interrupted dryly, “Without rain, plants couldn’t grow and we’d have a drought.”

“Whatever, goth girl,” Paullina said snidely, “We don’t care about your stupid environmental beliefs. Go talk to a plant or whatever freaks like you do.”

“I hate to agree with Dash,” Tucker grabbed Sam’s arm to prevent a possible homicide from happening, “but seriously, rain does suck. When I was walking, it almost soaked into my PDA and could have permanently damaged it. Rain is the enemy of technology. It’s good for the plants and all, but isn’t that the point of sprinklers? I mean, Danny, what about you? Do you like the rain?”

But Danny, exhausted from the ghost hunting the night before, had dozed off on the desk, hair dripping onto his hastily completed homework.

No, Sam decided. Nobody really appreciated the rain.

Why did she like rain and thunderstorms so much? Her gothic nature indicated she liked the dark and mystery it brought about—plus, it gave her “night” during the day, sparing her from the garish sunlight she was normally subjected to. But rain had some other quality to it. Whenever she heard the splatter of drops slide down her roof, its rhythmic beat calmed her down instantly. No matter what stressful situation that she was in, whether she couldn’t stop thinking about Danny in that way, when she had to cram for a Lancer exam in 3 hours, or when her parents were seriously considering sending her to “finishing school,” if rain—whether it be drizzle, gentle teardrops, or violent storms—came, it washed all her problems away and gave peace instantly. The sun wasn’t hope—rain was. Rain was a clean start, a washing away of grime and shame and hopelessness.

It also has another quality to it, Sam mused. The rain was sensual, when it slid down your cheeks and smoothed over flaws, it was almost like a shower, but more free and natural. It caressed the world, dripping and sliding through the tired world, bringing new life.

The phone rang, interrupting her peaceful reverie. She pulled a black RAZR out of my pocket of the signature black skirt, noticing that Danny was on the caller ID. Her relaxing evening was officially over, and she wouldn’t even be able to celebrate the fact that she was home alone, without her meddling-morning-people parents, since the rest of the freedom would be fighting ghosts with Danny. Not that she would turn him down. She could never turn Danny down, whether she wanted to or not.

“Sam,” a voice cracked out over the phone. “Can you bring an extra Fenton thermos? I forgot and while I’m almost done fighting Ember, I have nowhere to put her. I’m at the park.”

“What would you do without me,” Sam teased softly, grabbing the thermos from its customary spot on her lightstand.

“Thanks,” his relieved tone was obvious over the phone. “Now, I gotta go. It’s slightly hard to aim when you’re on the phone. Flying while talking on the phone isn’t the smartest.”

“I’ll be there in a bit,” she sighed, and hung up on him.

The rain splattered against her hair, and it instantly absorbed all the moisture, hanging limply against her face. Her black tank top clung to her wet skin, making her extremely thankful that she was a goth and didn’t wear white. It wasn’t particularly cold—the biting cold of the rain was cancelled out by the hot humid air, causing a fairly comfortable temperature. Her combat boots splashed in the random water puddles spread awkwardly around the streets of Amity. Ahead of her she could see Danny fighting against Ember, throwing a green ectoblast directly at her.

She shook her head. Sam couldn’t believe that this was the same awkward, shy, blushing Danny she remembered when they were fourteen, that walked Casper High with his head down, avoiding as much attention as possible. He had matured so much through his 3 years of ghost hunting. Now, as a junior in high school, he still was shy, but he wasn’t afraid to stand up for himself. No longer a 5’5 wimp, he has grown taller to the height of 5’11, and while he wasn’t bulky, the years of ghost fighting had strengthened him enough that Dash quit bothering him around his sophomore year. She wondered what would have happened, in an alternate universe, where he never gained ghost powers—while he may have been safer and not exposed to so much at a young age, he never would have grown into the responsible, strong, and self confident best friend. Never would have become her Danny.

Not my Danny, she corrected herself. He wasn’t hers, and he never would be. Danny had no trouble finding a girlfriend nowadays, and she wasn’t going to sacrifice her friendship for some stupid infatuation she’d had since freshman year. Sam was not going to become some name on the list of ex-girlfriends Danny had over the course of high school. Tucker insisted they were perfect together…but it wasn’t worth it. While dating didn’t last, her friendship (she hoped) would stay as long as all three were alive.

Besides, she thought to herself sadly, he only views me as one of the guys. To him, I’m not even a girl. I’m just the best friend, she thought someone bitterly.

Just the best friend.

Thinking quickly, she unscrewed the top and sucked Ember into the thermos while she was distractedly fighting Danny.

Danny flew down and gave Sam a sopping wet hug. “Thank you so much! Normally it’s pretty easy to beat Ember, but I’ve been spacey lately and completely left the Fenton Thermos in the lab.” He surveyed her, and commented, “Damn, you’re completely soaked.”

Sam laughed lightly, and retorted, “Hey, I wouldn’t be talking, considering your hair and all.”

He brushed his white hair away from his eyes, so his face was much more visible. Sam grinned, thinking about how adorable he looked, and groaned disgustedly when she felt the water swish around in her combat boots. “Ugh, I hate it when water gets in my shoes. Still, this rain feels great,” she leaned her head backwards and let the rain slide down her cheeks.

Getting an idea, she grabbed her combat boots and started yanking them off, the boots making an odd sucking sound as she struggled, finally having it come off abruptly, resulting on her falling down on her butt onto the wet concrete.

Danny peered at her curiously. “Sam, what the heck are you doing?” he asked with some amusement.

Sam continued pulling off the opposite combat boot, the discretely started pulling down her purple stockings. Soon, her legs were completely bare, and she stood up, enjoying the feel of the water splashing against her bare feet.

“Sam, people are going to get wrong ideas about you if they see your purple stockings strewn around the city,” Danny drawled jokingly.

Sam merely kicked a particularly large puddle of water at him. “Water fight!” she shrieked immaturely.

“Doesn’t really work to have a water fight in the rain, but hey, it works for me,” he snickered, and then returned the favor by jumping into another puddle.

Sam forgot her normally emotionless goth ways and ran behind him, her feet sinking into the muddy ground of the park. Danny flew past her and dragged her down into a large puddle that had been created as a result of the rain.

“Cheater!” she gasped, sitting upright, her short black hair plastered onto her face. “No using your powers!”

“Sorry,” he said, not sounding sorry at all.

She held up her hand, and said lightly, “Fine, but at least be a gentleman and help me up from here.”

“Anything for you, milady,” he said mockingly, but extended his hand to assist her. Sam, instead of standing up, grabbed him down into the water with her.

“Can’t believe you fell for that so easily,” she snickered at his groans. A bit belatedly, she realized how awkward the position they were in, Danny straddling her in a public park. No, not Danny Fenton, Danny Phantom. Paullina would murder her if she were there. But nobody was at the park during the rainstorm, so her blushing face was unnoticed by everyone, except for maybe Danny.

Danny, instead of getting up, merely brushed the wet hair away from her eyes. The rain splattered against them both, smoothing over both of them, dancing endlessly. “Sam,” he said softly.

Sam’s voice caught in her throat. Danny’s eyes glowed brighter than ever, and when amethyst met green, he leaned down and kissed her.

Sam’s eyes widened, but they shut slowly when Danny put his arm around her waist, pulling her closer to him. The rain continued to splash, sliding between them, molding them together. The sensual feeling of Danny’s wet skin between hers rose and the icy temperature of his body stung her lips, but not in a bad way.

Danny pulled away from her suddenly and gasped, saying, “I’m so sorry Sam, I didn’t mean to do that to you, I—“

But Sam merely ignored the apology and pulled him back down, kissing him fiercely. Maybe this was the end of their friendship. Maybe these kisses are a complete and utter mistake. Maybe both of them would regret it afterwards.

But right now, she didn’t want to think about the consequences. She was kissing him, and he was kissing her back, and the rain caressed both of them gently and slid against their skin.

Maybe after this, it would be the beginning of something new, a deeper connection then they already were on, on the same level of this kiss that exposed their raw feelings and channeled it into the moment. She could feel the emotions in him, the caring, the raw lust, the passion, and not wanting to let go. And, maybe, just maybe, she could something even stronger. Something she was afraid to hope for.

And all around them, the rain dripped down, washing away the world behind them.

I don't like this at all, so constructive criticism would be nice. It rained yesterday (YAY!) and it rarely does, and since i have writer's block on EBGO, I randomly did this instead of hw. Go me! XD Haha the anti-pointless fluff person wrote this. Ah, well, pointless fluff is good now and then. Lawl.
